Bawden trained as an illustrator, book designer

and mural painter at the Design School of the

Royal College of Art from 1922-5 under the tutelage

of Paul Nash. He was a close friend of Eric Ravilious.

Throughout the 1930's he practised as an illustrator,

poster designer and textile and wallpaper designer as

well as teaching at the RCA. In 1933 he was given his

first one-man exhibition at Zwemmers Gallery. Bawden

produced some fine paintings and drawings whilst

serving as an Official WarArtist during WWll in Belgium,

France and the Middle East. Like Ravilious, he was

commissioned to produce several ceramic designs for

Wedgwood.
